Write What You Don't Know: It's common advice for a writer to write what he knows - to stick to his personal experience or the experiences of those around him. But there's a big difference between writing something real and writing something true. Cameron MacKenzie's new collection of short stories, River Weather, is largely based on his years growing up in Northern Virginia. The events are drawn from his life, but in order to turn those events into stories, MacKenzie had to learn how to play with reality, how to test it, and how to open up personal experience onto human experience. Come listen as MacKenzie discusses some principles of short fiction, reads from his work, and explores the difference between life and art.
